About me:

I am a late twenties-something female, living in Sydney, Australia.  I am currently studying a Diploma of Library and Information Services at TAFE, part-time by night, and work in a non-library related field by day.

Why library studies?  Well when I first finished high school I was sure I wanted to be a research scientist, however when I got to university I  realised this wasn’t for me.  I dropped out after 2 years and found myself working in various jobs, including, hospitality, reception and administration.  From this I discovered that I really enjoyed working with people and had a natural ability for teaching/training others.  I always thought I would go back and study at some stage, it was just a matter of what and how.  After many years of trying to figure out “what I wanted to do with the rest of my life”, I came up with 2 options:

  1. Become a teacher; or
  2. Become a librarian.

Although being a teacher is appealing in some ways, the idea of dealing with teenagers everyday isn’t.  Also it would mean I wouldn’t be able to work full-time while I studied.  Whereas becoming a librarian, although taking longer so I could continue to work full-time, meant that I could combine my love of reading and research with my aptitude for teaching.

So in July 2007 I started a Diploma of Library and Information Services through TAFE, which is a 3 year part-time course.  When I finish this I will be qualified as a Library Technician.  I then hope to study a Bachelor of Applied Science (Library and Information Management) at University to become a librarian (which I will do by correspondence).  Although I could of just gone and studied the Bachelor, I think I made the best decision by starting with the Diploma.  Unlike the Bachelor, it is very hands on, so I have learnt the practical things I need to work in a library, whereas the Bachelor focuses more on the theoretical and management side of things.

I am enjoying the Diploma immensely, and am lucky to have fantastic classmates.  Now all I need is a job in a library!
